Frequently asked questions
for dental cover
What's the difference between general and major dental?
General dental is a category of dental treatment that focuses on minor dental services. It consists of two sub-categories:
- Preventative Dental for treatments like scale and cleans and check-ups, and
- General Restorative Dental for treatments like simple fillings and extractions.
Major Dental is a category of dental treatment that focuses on complicated services such as root canals, crowns and bridges.
How much can I get back when I claim on dental services?
The amount you get back will depend on the cover you have, and the dental service being provided. You should get a quote from HBF before any treatment so you know exactly what's covered, your benefits, waiting periods and any out of pocket costs you may incur.
Waiting periods may apply before any benefits are payable. Benefits are paid up to applicable limits.
What cover do I need for surgical dental extractions?
This will depend on where the surgical tooth extraction is taking place.
Surgical dental extractions at a dental practice
If your extraction is taking place at a dental practice, you will need extras cover with general restorative dental included to be able to claim benefits for the procedure.
Surgical dental extractions at a hospital
If your extraction takes place at a hospital, you will need to have hospital cover with Dental surgery included in order to claim benefits for accommodation and theatre fees.
If you've already received a treatment plan from your dental provider - including all the relevant dental item numbers — you can give us a call on 133 423 to complete a benefit quote. We'll be able to tell you exactly what benefits you are entitled to.
My kids are eligible for free public dental services. Do they still need private dental cover?
This depends on what level of cover you want for your kids.
Depending on the state or territory you live in, your kids may be eligible for free general dental care. This will typically cover treatments such as check-ups, dental cleaning, fillings and x-rays.
While dental treatments like crowns, endodontic treatment or braces are generally not covered under these programs, we always recommend you first check what services are available from the dental programs near you. If your state or territory doesn't provide these services to kids for free, you may wish to purchase extras insurance to avoid having to fully cover these costs out of your own pocket.
To learn more about Government-funded kids dental care and what's covered by your state or territory's programs, visit the Department of Health's website.
What cover do I need for wisdom teeth surgery?
This will depend on where the wisdom teeth surgery is taking place.
Wisdom teeth surgery in a private hospital
If you’d like to go to a private hospital to have your wisdom teeth removed, you’ll need:
- hospital cover that includes Dental surgery and;
- extras cover that includes general restorative dental
The reason you’ll need both hospital and extras cover is because hospital cover will help cover the cost of your hospital stay (like your accommodation and theatre fees), while extras cover will help pay for your dental surgeon’s fees.
Wisdom teeth surgery in a dental practice
If your wisdom teeth extraction takes place in a dental practice, you’ll need general restorative dental included in your cover to be able to claim benefits for the procedure.
Can I claim on my HBF Orthodontics cover for mail-order aligners (at-home treatment)?
No. We will only pay benefits on services provided by HBF approved providers for orthodontic treatment received in clinic.
